These scores were confirmed by the Sandbox co-creator, Andy Skelton. Thanks, Andy.
Congratulations to the winners for your fine themes. And an equal congratulations to all participants. You all should feel proud in having participated in something very beneficial to the community and I hope the exposure of the competition and what you may have learned are worthy prizes for all to have.
If you are interested, all the data returned by the judges is available. Also, I’ll be posting some of the quips and tidbits that the judges passed along later this evening tomorrow afternoon, methinks.
In conclusion, I present to you the participants of the first Sandbox Designs Competition. Take a moment to appreciate their designs.
And don’t forget to thank the judges, who put up with my repetitive hassling, nagging, nit-picking, etc. They were excellent to have offered their time, their expertise, and their good will to all the participants.
Finally, congrats to the WordPress community. I hope you enjoy these designs. You know who to thank — the participants/designers. ![]()

Congrats to the winners and runner-ups! It was fun to participate and I look forward to future contests. This has been a great learning experience for me.
Just for reference, on the spreadsheet for the judging data, F is first, S is second, T is third, and R is runner up. [Ducks out.]
Congrats to all, not surprised at all that SandPress won, its very nice.
Congrats to everyone who won! 2 months of hard work… I guess it still paid off though, I love how mine looks. I just feel so ashamed seeing Potassium score 0
Don’t feel ashamed. The judges only had so many points to distribute and their distribution was somewhat constricted.
Potassium is a fine design. Chin up, amigo.
Congrats to all the winners and thanks to the judges. I think the judges did a fine, and fair, job. There were lots of good designs and my favorites were among the winners. I’m frankly grateful that Takimata, my anti-blog blog theme, scored a couple of points.
And thanks for putting on the competition and creating Sandbox. I’m really looking forward to creating more themes with it and I hope to be back next year.
score naught FTW!!! (at least for promised land)
And for the record, during the failed ArenaWP.com competition, the comments ran wild with predictions that one of my themes would win. And it didn’t. Didn’t even place. And that was disappointing. So I know how some of you may feel.
Congrats for all the winners and all the participants. I was glad to be part of the scoring team. Hope nobody’s too sad.
@Upstart Blogger > very sharp design!
Thank you everyone it was really fun to participate. I know a lot of people are disappointed, I am personally surprised that the judges didn’t give points to Blueberry and The Promised Land. the important things is we had fun while participating.
SandPress is far from over the code will be moving to Google Code and SandPress.com . I will continue to support it and take it to the next level anyone who wants to join in and develop it further is welcome. I am open to suggestion too. I’ll do a blog post soon with more details don’t want to abuse the comment system here.
Kudos, Scott and Andy, on a successful design competition.
Big congrats to the winners.
Extra special big congrats to the WP community who get to benefit from the really great themes created by all the designers who participated.
I’d say this if I all I got was a kick in the pants: this contest was awesome and a lot of fun. Never mind that it’s helped fulfill two major personal/professional goals of mine. Thanks, judges and thanks, Scott. I can only imagine the work that went into this contest — it’s appreciated.
Wah mas naryo hebat euy, CONGRATZ ya!
congrats to the winners!! sandpress was pretty impressive!
Congratulations Arpit and to everyone that competed. I think this was a great competition that everyone had a great time competing in. I would have hated to been one of the judges all of the designs were great
The competition was tons of fun. It got me to finally finish a design, and now I’m busy completing (and posting) the rest of my half-starts. It’s awfully gratifying to have people downloading my theme.
Having not given every design judge-like attention, I’d never second guess their choices. Sandpress is indeed slick (looks like a grownup made it!), and I particularly love Moo-Point. Promised Land really sang to me, too…
I’d like to step away from my UN-esque role for a moment and give a special congrats to Carolyn. Note her name occurs thrice in the list above. That in and of itself demonstrates some exceptional talent.
I was also wondering for how many of the participants was this (a) your first publicly-released WordPress design, and/or (b) your first design competition?
Agreed Scott. Carolyn’s designs were great. I loved Diurnal’s use of styling changes based on time of day!
To your questions: My second publicly-released WordPress design and my first design competition.
HAH!! This was both my first competition, and my first released design, and I don’t care that I scored 0 points, I have learned things! I did think that promised land would do better, it’s probably the first ‘bright’ theme/design I’ve really seen that wouldn’t annoy me if I had to use it
As for my design, since I’ve been actively using it for a little bit now I’v found some things about it that just bug me, so it looks like I’ll keep working on it and update it, hopefully soon.
Thanks again for the great experience!
This was my first publicly released theme and my first design competition. I had hoped to do better (i.e. score at least one point), but I did learn a lot. And I discovered the sandbox, two new software packages that I really like (SftpDrive and e), and at least of couple of interesting bloggers that I’ve added to Google Reader. (I’m looking at you engtech.)
I’m shocked that Diurnal didn’t at least place in the top 3. Carolyn’s definitely got a lot of talent.
@Wendy: I don’t see your name on the participants list. If you’ve got something “more special” than the wide variety of themes that we put together, I’m sure we’d all love to see it.
Congrats to Arpit, and all the designers. The contest was an awesome experience to be a part of, thanks Scott, for hosting it. I have learned so much! So that would be a yes to both questions (a) and (b) and I’m hooked, can’t wait to do more of both.
Congratulations to the winners and runner ups! This was a great competition, thanks a lot:-)
I am very happy having participated:-)
Sadly, Wendy left fake info so I unapproved her comment. I actually wrote her a rather nice email. Silly snarking.
I appreciate everyone sharing their info. Let me say, I’m nothing but pleased with all the participants. You guys will always have this chunk of the Web as a claim-to-fame.
To answer your question Scott: This was third publicly released theme, and my second design competition. I started working with WordPress about one year ago, and I learned a lot from the competition:-)
I think the first one and the third one are cool. somehow the second one did not impress me.
*sigh* Thanks Scott… I don’t want to rant through comments, so you should stick around my blog, I’ll be posting about this soon.
Again, congrats Arpit and everyone else.
See you guys… next competition, perhaps
Congrats winners. A very close race between two of my personal favourites
@scott this was officially my first free original WordPress theme. My other Theme Clean is just a mod of the Dark theme by ilemoned and bartelme.
Also this was my first online design competition, I have taken part in small design competition in college never got first prize though.
Congrats to all the winners and runners-up.
Hope to see some more competitions in the future (and hopefully, I’ll get the time to participate next time!).
Both are first yeah =D I didn’t win, got a total of zero but that’s alright for me =) The experience was a thriller
@Scott. This was my first publicly released theme (not counting the constant variations on a theme that is Upper Fort Stewart) and my first design contest.
@Scott: My first time in an online competition and my first publicly released… item, ever.
@scott-
4th and 5th public designs for wordpress. 2nd competition for wordpress, 4th design competition.
*feels old*
@sunburntkamel: You didn’t submit in the pre-ArenaWP competition? Everyone lost in that one.
Everyone: General feedback from the judges this evening and a reults page to match!
Congratulations to everybody!

I would have liked to have 1 point
But i have an R
Congrats to the winners. I love the creativity in so many of the non-winners, too. This contest has really inspired me, so much that I’m basing all new designs on Sandbox.
Hi,
I have a (stupid) question: what happens whether I use a design made for sandbox when the standart “sandbox” theme is updated?
I mean, I understand every update of sandbox default theme is better and better… But if I use one of the templates here, the author of that template should update it, isn’t it?
Thank you!
Hey German. All of the designs here are only CSS based designs. Therefore, as Scott updates Sandbox, users only have to switch out the CSS from one of these designs rather than using the default.
That is one of the great things about the designs made available here. It’s all CSS and images. No changes were made to the core Sandbox theme files.
I think this question refers to what happens to theme ‘templates’ if the theme, the Sandbox in this instance, is changed and the template isn’t.
Eg, if I rename
div#commentsin the Sandboxcomments.phptodiv#chatter, what to do?Well, the answer is the Sandbox markup as it is in 0.9.x won’t change that much. Hopefully designers will make any minor changes along the way.
i’m coming after you if you start renaming classes again, scott.
I understand Scott, I was just hoping you wouldn’t opt to use
div#chatterNo worries. Nothing of the sort to happen on my watch.
Arpit Jacob is really the best
I would vote for him.
